Asthma
The link between asthma attacks and the occurrence of stress and anxiety
states is well established. When, as an asthma sufferer you are alert
to the possible onset of an asthma attack, there can be an immediate
reaction of a triggering of feelings of anxiety. Unfortunately, this
immediately creates a feedback loop in which the feelings of stress
and anxiety at the prospect of an asthma attack heighten and magnify
your awareness of the symptons which tends to enhance them, which, in
turn, magnifies the anxiety and stress, which again heightens the physical
symptons, so you may be escalating the whole thing into a panic episode
which greatly amplifies the breathing difficulties and thereby creates
a very disturbing experience, which leaves you more sensitized to your
asthma symptons than ever, possibly reacting with greater anxiety than
before. All of these heightening effects are unnecessary and all come
directly from what you are telling yourself about your symptons in terms
of them signalling a sort of disaster. In hypnotherapy, we start to
turn this around by opening up to a new response which is simply to
accept the symptons when they arise and begin to relax around them and
this relaxation can be very deep but also very awake and alert. It's
really a complete reframing of the symptons as friend rather
than enemy. This rather troubled friend is you with the asthma
attack but you take care of your friend rather than take flight If you
take flight the chemical changes in your body will heighten the intensity
of the attack.
So using hypnosis we give direct suggestions to the sub conscious to
trigger this relaxation response when anxiety about an attack occurrs.Using
self hypnosis you can reinforce this new response. It will become stronger
and stronger as you repeatedly allow it to happen, so your asthma symptons
literally begin to shrink, without the magnification of anxiety.
