Stammering

All stammerers are familiar with the fact that generally their stammering becomes much less of a problem when they are with people with whom they feel relaxed and in surroundings where they feel at home. If your vocal apparatus has become unnaturally tensed that is going to make any tendency to stammer much more pronounced. If you already are fearful and anticipating that in a certain situation or with certain people, you are going to stammer and you then experience yourself doing just that, you create an affirmative loop that will fix that pattern of response at a level where it eventually becomes automatic, with repetition. The approach with hypnotherapy is simply to use this mechanism to establish an habitual relaxed response to all the situations that are triggers for that stammering. The direct suggestions are that you are alert to the very first sign of the anxious responses and that those feelings themselves cause you to experience within yourself a very powerful sense of relaxation. It also allows your attention to shift from focusing on your own vocalisation on to the whole situation and the people you are with, so that your responses are able to flow much more easily. It follows then that you begin to be more centered in the pleasure you are getting out of simply communicating rather than anxiety about how you sound or look to other people. In a very real way you begin to rewrite the program that triggers you into stammering. The relaxation , through repetition becomes a stronger and stronger element in each of the specific situations where the stammering habitually occurs.
